New Caribbean Resorts To Break Ground In Jamaica

Thursday, 27 July 2006 10:36

Several new resorts are slated for development in Jamaica in the coming years. RIU Resorts recently opened the  RIU Ocho Rios on the adjacent property to the Dunn's River hotel property.

Iberostar Resorts plan entry to Jamaica for the first time with a project for a large new resort comprised of three facilities. The five-star Iberostar Montego Bay hotel (later named Iberostar Rose Hall Beach) will be the first, with 366 rooms and plans are for an opening by the end of 2006 or early 2007.

AM Resorts will begin work on Secrets Montego Bay. Excellence Resorts has plans to develop a new Excellence hotel in the Oyster Bay area, complete with over-the-water bungalows. In 2006, Grupo Pinero will begin construction on three new hotels totaling 1,800 rooms at Pear Tree in St. Ann. These will operate under the Bahia Principe name. All plans are subject to delays and name changes. Jamaica continues to bring in the top all-inclusive chains from around the world and no doubt will continue to offer a wide variety of choices for all travelers.

In addition to the new resort offerings, Jamaica's airports began receiving new nonstop service via Spirit Airlines with originating service from Fort Lauderdale (FLL). Spirit  began service November 10, 2005, from FLL to Kingston, Jamaica. Flights from Ft Lauderdale to Montego Bay began in late 2005. Connecting flights are available from Atlantic City, Chicago, Detroit, New York/LGA, Providence/Boston area, and Washington's Reagan National airports.
