History The exciting history of Turks and Caicos began with a series of early establishments by the Taino, Lucayan and Bermudan peoples. Unknown forces combined with enslavement and imported disease eventually diminished these civilizations and left them under the influence of British, French and Spanish rule. The Bermudans emerged as the natives of the Islands and thrived in the 17th century through slavery, cotton and salt trade.
