Entry Requirements

All travelers between the U.S. and the Caribbean will be required to carry passports beginning January 1, 2007 as mandated by the United States Department of Homeland Security and the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. We encourage you to begin the passport application processes early to avoid unexpected delays. Travelers should allow a minimum of six weeks between their application submission and receipt of passport. Passports can be expedited for an additional fee. All visits to Antigua require roundtrip airfare and can be no longer than six months without a Visa.

Foreign residents of the United States and all other foreign visitors not holding a US Passport must contact the appropriate government authorities to determine the entry and visa requirements.

Departure Tax

Antigua has a $20 per person departure tax which is subject to change.

What to Wear

Light shirts and shorts are best suited for the warm year-round weather and swimwear should be kept near the beach and pool areas. Some restaurants may require jackets for men and dresses for ladies. Resort restaurants typically require a collared shirt and long pants for men and island casual for ladies when dining in the evening.

Banks & Currency

The official currency of Antigua is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, which currently has an exchange rate of 2.67. The U.S. dollar, as well as traveler’s checks and major credit cards, are accepted everywhere. Banks are open throughout the week from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Driving

Remember to drive on the left side of the road when visiting Antigua. A valid driver’s license, either national or international, and a permit issued from Antigua is required to drive on the island. The temporary permit is valid for three months and costs $20. Vehicle rental agencies can assist in obtaining the permit. Driving in the islands is best left to professional taxis or transportation provided by the resort.

Communications

Calls to the U.S. are easy in Antigua as most hotels offer direct U.S. calling.

Electricity

Some of Antigua is powered with 110 volt outlets while the remaining is 220 volts. The majority of hotels feature both voltages.

Water

The water in Antigua is generally safe to drink but a collection of bottled waters is also available for those wanting an alternative.

Airports

All visitors traveling by air to Antigua will arrive and depart through the V.C. Bird International Airport. Both direct flights and connections through St. Martin and San Juan are available from North America and there are several weekly flights from Europe.

Pets

Any animal imported into Antigua must have a permit from the Chief Veterinary Officer before arrival. The animal must be micro-chipped and tested for Rabies Titer by an approved laboratory. Results of the tests should be forwarded to:

Geography

Protected by a near continuous wall of coral reef, Antigua encompasses 108 square miles of white sand beaches, verdant plains and mountainous regions. The Island has an intricate coastline arrayed with secluded coves. And uninhabited beaches are a regular and welcoming discovery.

Climate

Antigua enjoys a pleasant year-round temperature ranging from the mid-70’s to the mid-80’s and has an average rainfall of only 45-inches. Trade winds blow constantly and the low humidity seems to keep everything just right.

Language

The official language of Antigua is English intermingled with local dialect.

Government

With a British-style parliamentary, Antigua is a constitutional monarchy represented by an appointed Governor General as the head of state. The government consists of three branches: a legislative, executive and judicial branch.

History

The history of Antigua is far reaching, with evidence of civilization ranging as far back as 2400 B.C. Natives from nearby islands flourished and diminished on the island but it was eventually controlled by the fierce Caribs, an aggressive people who spanned most of the region and subjugated other cultures by force. The Caribs eventually fell victim to English colonization, which led to slavery and mass production of sugar plantations. Remnants of Antigua’s diverse history can be seen in ancient tools, ruined fortifications, shipwrecks on the reef and the perfectly-restored structures of English Harbourtown.

Necessary Documents:

• Proof of Status- If divorced, proof of Decree Absolute is required. If a Widow/Widower, the Death Certificate and original marriage certificate is required.

Restrictions:

• Both parties must be over fifteen and provide written authorization from the legal guardian if under 18.
• The marriage must also be solemnized or celebrated in the presence of two or more witnesses, not including the Marriage Officer.
• For church weddings, many ministers require proof of membership.

Fees:

• There is a registration fee of $40 (U.S.) that must be paid at the courthouse in the new government buildings on Queen Elizabeth Highway.
• The application fee for the special marriage license is $150 (U.S),
• The Marriage Officer's fee is US$50.
