Read Full Review Cindy , Halifax, Nova ScotiaVisted resort between 04/20/2009 and 04/04/2009For my very first trip to the Dominican, the Viva Tangerine was awesome! The resort is not big, like some others, but its well worth the money. The resort had very clean rooms, and the maids always had the fridge stocked with pop and water. When we first arrived, they gave us a room with a crappy view, a window that looked out to some pipes, but after calling the main desk they happily moved us to another room that was much better. My advise, if you're not completely happy with your room, complain!!! They will always accommodate you!! The food at the resort was good...I tried a lot of different foods and didn't get sick. Keep in mind, the resort imports all of their meats, etc, so its safe to eat. The only suggestion I have is make sure the eggs that you get at the omelet station are throughly cooked because they don't refrigerate the eggs. The food was good overall but if you are on a salt restricted diet be warned because the food tends to be salty. They have a buffet that runs 3 times per day and snack type foods for in between meals. The snack food consists of fresh fruit, oven fired pizza (it was awesome!!) hotdogs, hamburgers. The bar is always open too...may I suggest the Mamajuana for the guys and the Banana-Mamas for the ladies. Watch out though...once they switch from the glass to plastic cups in the evening they tend to make the drinks very strong....so ask them to make it with less if you like. A lot of people brought their own insulated mugs, thus making the trips to the bar less frequently. The nightly entertainment is really good. I loved Luis, Teddy, Manny, RoseMary, and Kayla. They were all great!! The best performance was the " Grease" show..highly recommend you see it. The performers were always around making sure everyone was having a good time. The disco wasn't bad, but not great either. Its located in the basement, there's a weird kind of Halifax Harbor smell down there...so if you have asthma or allergies stay away. I think its more tailored to the younger 20 something crowd. The beach wasn't bad, although the surf was kind of rough. It was windy most days, but it was good in a way because it didn't get too hot. Make sure you wear lots of sunscreen because the sun is much stronger there. The beach vendors were annoying at first, but you have to be persistent and tell them flat out NO. I did make a deal with them though...if they left me alone I would grab them some free pizza and beer/water from the snack bar. All of the beach vendors stuff is way over priced, so if you do like something only offer them $1 to $2. Keep in mind that the average Dominican only makes 5000 pesos a month which is about $145 US. There is a much bigger selection of items in Sosua and Cabarete and you can usually beat them down in price there. When you do go into the towns, take the local bus..its usually a minivan and if you don't mind riding with the locals its cheap, about 50 cents US. Always, always bargain, even for a taxicab. More about the beach, watch where you walk. There are stray dogs (friendly and not aggressive) that roam the beach and they poop and pee wherever the need arises. Overall the Viva Tangerine was great. I look forward to going back there next time with my husband and 2 kids. The children's program on the resort is phenomenal and the staff goes out of their way to make the kids feel special.
